Jess released her kids inspired adult friendly album & accompanying 16 minute short film created by award winning director/animator Steven Mertens Strawberry Wind through Amazon Originals (click on image for purchase details) on April 27th 2018.

It tells the story of a little girl who goes to sleep only to go on a grand adventure in a vivid, cosmic dreamworld. In the film, which also includes album tracks 'Supermoon', 'Strawberry Wind', 'Same Old Tune' & 'I Am A Dreamer', the dream catcher is an animated cat who guides the little girl through a wonderland of flying fishes, gremlins & other magical creatures protecting her along the way.

Strawberry Wind was produced by long time Jess spirit animal collaborator Richard Swift and delivers on the promise to create a truthful album for children & parents representing what Jess calls 'the beautiful divide' of juggling family life with her creative aspirations.

Jess with Richard Swift

After giving birth to daughter Violet Marlowe (now 4 years old) Jess explains "Since becoming a mother, I found myself being around the house a lot and I started gravitating to these wonderful older albums to listen to with my daughter - The Beatles, John Lennon, Roger Miller, Harry Nilsson's The Point & Carole King's Really Rosie. I realised that people aren't making albums like that anymore, and that really inspired me to go down this new musical path. Little did I know while recording Strawberry Wind that I was pregnant with my second child."

Hearing that Jessie is recording a new album has reignited my passion for the Sparrow Site - something I have curated for over 13 years !

Hearing that Jessie has enlisted Leigh & Chandra on this journey made me think of this Blog interview I did with the girls and posted on 19th November 2010 from Sparrows asking the girls of their feelings way back then on meeting Jessie for the first time! And when they joined Jessie on Tour in December 2011

The late great Richard Swift makes revisiting these memories super bitter sweet but wanted to celebrate this 10 year anniversary with their thoughts back then - hope you all enjoy re-reading these memories as much as I did especially as the twins & Jessie have since become lifelong friends!

Getting to know the Watson Twins

10th November 2010

When I first heard that Jessie had enlisted Chandra & Leigh Watson to sing sweet harmonies with her on her new record I couldn’t have been happier ‘cause I’d fallen for TWT ever since I first heard the ‘Southern Manners EP’ and then their iconic collaboration with the great Jenny Lewis on the spectacular ‘Rabbit Fur Coat’ which sealed the deal and I’ve been an avid listener ever since.

The girls were sweet enough to answer some of my questions for this Sparrow Blog about everything from working with Jessie to touring to music inspirations. These girls are the real deal and the bees’s knees - Enjoy !!

Q

How & when did you first get to meet Jessie ?

A

At Fairfax Studios when she was working on her new record - it turns out we knew a lot of the same folks but had just never crossed paths !

Q

You are obviously very familiar with Fairfax Studios in Los Angeles as your own record ‘Talking to You Talking to Me’ was recorded there, but how did it come about that you would sing on Jessie’s record?

A

Kevin Auguras and Richard Swift  who worked on recording Jessie’s record gave us a call and asked if we would swing by the studio and once we heard the songs it was all over !

Q

Do you have any favourites from the Jessie songs you contributed to?

A

This record is seriously jam packed with great tunes - ‘Dancer’ aka ‘Honey Call Me’ will get stuck in your head it’s so catchy & sweet! We just joined in on that song at her show here in LA last month.

*The girls didn’t know I had already Sparrow Blogged about this great clip captured by Jessie’s friend Carrie Todd - they must love it as much as me ! Check it out below!

My favourite ladies !

Q

Do you think there is a healthy climate out there at the moment for strong female singer / songwriters nowadays?

A

Yes & no - I think the climate is kinda tough for everyone with over saturation and the fact that people don’t buy music any more. So it will be interesting to see how things change.

Q

Is it hard to stay authentic to your music’s passions? Are you both totally in tune with the kind of music you both love?

A

Music is in our blood, not really much you can do when it’s part of who you are…….that being said we are constantly challenging ourselves and I think having each other as a bounce board helps to keep things true.

Q

You recently finished touring with Cowboy Junkies - how are the new songs sounding live and do you enjoy life on the road ?

A

The last tour we did was just the two of us and acoustic guitars. It was a little terrifying to play that stripped down but was actually very liberating. All these songs begin with our voices and a guitar, so it was nice to go back to that.

Q

Who would you describe Jessie as an artist ?

A

Wow artist and person ……. She is just so sweet funny amazing and smart - soulful and she has that beautiful smokey voice that is easy on the ears! She was really great to work with in the studio and her excitement helped to feed the energy both in the recording studio and on stage.

Q

I adore your cover of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’  from your record ‘Fire Songs’ being a Brit are their any other British bands you have a soft spot for ?

A

That’s a tough one as there are soooooooo many !! But of course The Rolling Stones, Elbow, Bat for Lashes, Doves, The Sunday’s, Vashti Bunyan, Billy Bragg, Nick Drake, Elvis Costello, Radiohead…..and the list could go on and on.

Q

I adore your fashion & style - Being based in LA are their any fav stores you frequent more than others ?

A

Thrift thrift and more thrift ……. Second hand shops in out lying suburbs have little gems but its all about getting in your car and driving to those spots.

Q

Finally - what is the best thing about being identical twins in the music industry these days ?

A

We’ve never had to go it alone - we always have each other !

Quote from Chandra - Sparrow Blog Friday 23 December 2011

"We are so excited to go out on the road with Jessie for many reasons!

First & foremost she is an absolute sweetheart with a wicked sense of humour and of course for the fact that we get to sing these amazing songs with her is the icing on the cake!

We will also be singing some new songs we are working up for our next full length record so it will be a grand adventure no doubt !!"

Check out some shots from this part of Jessie's journey and the recording of Little Spark !!

Get ready for some super nostalgic posts this year - having a wonderful Sunday afternoon going through all the great photo memories and my blogs from Jessie's career journey over the past 15 years or so - its a treasure trove of wonderful memories just like the first time she met Leigh & Chandra - hope you enjoyed looking back as much as me !!
